What you will learn

Preaching? Check. Teaching? Absolutely. Visiting the sick and working to make your community better? Yes, please. All of that may come naturally compared to supervising other people. If you feel like your education prepared you for everything but this critical part of the job, you’re not the only one.

Supervision—especially within congregations and faith communities—requires a unique set of skills to be successful. This course is where those skills are developed.

The resources are wonderful. The content is great and the format reshapes our ideas of how we behave as a group of church people coming together to do God’s work.

In Stepping Up to Supervision, you'll experience hands-on training and practical wisdom that includes:

  • The importance of job descriptions and how to design them effectively
  • How to hire the right people, so that managing becomes easier
  • Techniques for setting performance expectations
  • What to do when terminating employment becomes necessary
  • The interface between employment and covenantal relationships
  • …and so much more!

Sometimes, a shift is really just an acknowledgment that business as usual no longer works — and that maybe it never did. Case in point: you may have inherited or even established some ineffective ways of managing the people on your staff. Stopping that may be complicated, but it isn’t impossible. We can help.

Stepping Up to Supervision is your chance to figure out how to manage the culture of your church staff in a sustainable way. Whether your hiring, firing, delegating, or empowering, this course will give you the skills and confidence you deserve.

Course Agenda

Supervision within a congregation begins by understanding the tension between employment relationships and covenantal relationships. We’ll also explore the need for a performance management system, and clarify the three unique sets of expectations for every staff member.
In our second session, we’ll discuss the ways in which feedback impacts your performance management system. From daily check-ins and quarterly goal reviews to the all-important annual appraisal process, you’ll learn how to craft your reactions and responses effectively.
Your congregation is vulnerable to 10 pitfalls in the hiring process. Do you know what they are? Hiring the right people makes supervision easier and more enjoyable. Even then, it will be necessary to end some employment relationships. Learn the right way before it happens.
