From Fixing to Listening: Making the Pivot

Learn to listen to your neighbors and begin to serve in ways that are authentic and responsive.

About this Course

Fixing to Listening: Making the Pivot is the second in a series of mini-courses on the four pivots. It focuses on how church leaders and churches can–and should–come to challenges with a posture of listening rather than a posture of “fixing.” The church has traditionally been an organization that has told people how they should behave or what they should do, but in our current culture that may push people away from the life-giving grace of God, rather than invite them into it. Fixing to Listening will help churches and church leaders begin to make that pivot.

What You’ll Be Able to Do:

Understand the distinction between a "fixing" posture and a "curiosity" posture in addressing ministry challenges.
Imagine an experiment in which you could transfer your focus from fixing to listening.
Develop openness to the movement of God's Spirit through wonder, play, and imagination in ministry contexts.

Have you felt like you’ve tried everything to bring people to church, but it’s not working?

Fixing to Listening provides permission and encouragement to trust God and listen well, taking pressure off of leaders that feel it’s up to them to “fix” everything in their church and community. The course gives actionable steps and spiritual practices that will help church members and leaders rest in God’s leading and provision, rather than trying to do everything themselves.

By providing examples of how other organizations are doing this work, this course will fuel participants’ imagination. You’ll learn what change can happen when you listen to God and then listen to your community.

Frequently Asked Questions

Academy courses consist of 6-10 lessons or modules, each walking you through the “know, be, do” learning framework. You’ll learn some new information with instructor videos and other resources (know). You’ll engage in a spiritual practice that will help you develop your faith around the topic (be). Then, you’ll be asked to apply what you’ve learned through activities completed online or in the “real world” (do).

Each module is designed to take 15-45 minutes. Some learners complete the course in as little as one day. Some do a module a day or even a module a week. We suggest allowing some time between modules to process what you are learning, but not so much time that you lose momentum.

Each course includes a flexible leader’s guide with multiple pathways for group facilitation. You’ll find thought-provoking discussion questions and practical activities that connect faith with daily life, designed to work with whatever preparation time you have available. These resources equip you to foster meaningful discipleship experiences that meet your community where they are.

The private online group allows you to connect with others. Because our courses don’t have a required start or stop date, you will encounter others in different places in the course and even in different courses altogether. This is by design. Feel free to interact as much or as little as you like.

Reach out via email to faithlead@luthersem.edu with your question and we’ll get back to you with a response within two business days.

The best way to connect with us is to complete this form with your suggestion. We always want to hear your feedback. You may also include it in the comments section of the course evaluation.
